College football experienced its biggest shake up in the playoff race to date. Seven teams ranked in the top 17 lost last Saturday,
including three top-eight teams, and yet one loser's playoff hopes may have actually improved thanks to the upsets beneath them in the
rankings. That team is Indiana. On any other week they may have tumbled out of the top 12, but not this week. The SEC triumvirate of Alabama,
Ole Miss and Texas A&M hit the road and lost to unranked conference foes, and Big 12 contenders BYU and Colorado fell as well. When the storm
clouds exited the SEC, playoff bubbles burst in Oxford and Tuscaloosa. Believe it or not, there's still a slim glimmer of hope for the
Tide (9-3) despite a 24-3 beatdown at Oklahoma, but Ole Miss (9-3) is a goner after losing to Florida. Other than Indiana, the big winner was
the ACC, which might be in line to land both its conference champion and runner-up in the playoffs. And might South Carolina be a fourth
option for the SEC if more chaos ensues?

Are you ready for some football? You better be because you're about to be jam-packed with NFL action throughout Thanksgiving week,
with a trio of games on Thursday, a Black Friday game, and then our usual dosage on Sunday and Monday. That's four days of NFL over a five-day
span, which seems like the ideal way to spend time after eating our body weight in turkey and stuffing.

In the NBA, the 76ers approach rock bottom while the Celtics make case for No. 1 and the Lakers and Knicks are streaking. The 76ers
are a league-worst 2-12 one month into the season. Speaking of losing, the Cleveland Cavaliers finally got a taste of what that feels like,
dropping their first game of the season to the Boston Celtics after tying for the second-best start in NBA history. The Los Angeles Lakers
and New York Knicks find themselves just outside the top five after winning streaks of six and four games, respectively. They're right
behind the Houston Rockets, who have been one of the most impressive and surprising teams in the NBA.

NBA power rankings:
1. Cavaliers (17-1): Well, 82-0 is off the table, but the Cavs are still a juggernaut. Even without a couple of key contributors, they fought back in Boston to make it a game late, then picked up right where they left off by beating the pants off the injury-plagued Pelicans the next night. Cleveland has the best offensive rating, net rating and clutch rating in the NBA. There's no question that they've been the league's best team to this point, even if they did lose that one game.
2. Celtics (15-3): The champs are here. After Jayson Tatum hit a game-winner to hold off the Raptors, the Celtics handled business to put an end to the Cavs' 15-game winning streak to open the season. Boston isn't exactly where Joe Mazzulla wants them to be right now, especially in terms of defense and clutch execution, but they still have the league's second-best record -- plus Kristaps Porzingis is practicing again. They know what's necessary to win another title, and they're playing the long game.
3. Warriors (12-5): Steve Kerr had finally settled on a starting lineup, and then De'Anthony Melton went down for the year with an ACL injury. Absolutely brutal. If any team is going to sustain that kind of blow, however, it's the Warriors, who have perhaps the deepest roster in the league. As a team, however, they need to practice their freebies -- Golden State is last in the NBA at 69.5% from the free-throw line, and going 9 for 19 basically cost them Monday's game against the Clippers.
4. Thunder (13-4): So playing zero centers for 48 minutes wasn't, like, the easiest thing in the world. After two straight losses, however, OKC received the ray of sunshine known as Isaiah Hartenstein, who put up 13 points, 14 rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes and was a team-best plus-16 in Wednesday's win over the Blazers, his first game of the season. Expect him to be in the starting lineup sooner rather than later.
5. Rockets (12-6): If the refs had correctly called that Giannis Antetokounmpo stepped out of bounds in the final seconds of Monday's game, the Rockets would likely be on a seven-game winning streak. Even with the loss, they're breathing down the necks of the Western Conference leaders. We knew the defense would be really good, but the offense is pushing top-10 status after finishing in the bottom 10 last season. The talent on this team just comes at you in waves.
NFL power rankings:
1. Lions (10-1-0): They are a brutish, power team that can knock you off the ball and yet still hit shots off of that. The defense played well against the Colts.
2. Bills (9-2-0): They went into their bye having scored 30 points or more in five straight games. This is one team that has to hope the bye didn't slow them down.
3. Chiefs (10-1-0): They won another close game last week, which has been a season-long trend. Playing close against the Panthers is not a good look.
4. Eagles (9-2-0): Saquon Barkley is keying their offense right now, and the offensive line is mauling people. The defense has really come on over the past five games.
5. Vikings (9-2-0): They went unbeaten in their three-game road trip, which is tough to do. They were all close, but that matters little in the record.
CFB power rankings:
1. Oregon (11-0): Life's good if you're a Duck. Oregon sat at home and got a much-needed rest after eight straight weeks and watched two top-five Big Ten opponents clash. They still don't know if they'll face Ohio State again, this time in the Big Ten Championship Game, but it appears destined at this point. The Ducks clinched a spot in the Big Ten title game nine days ago, though the conference's mathematicians needed an additional 72 hours last week to figure that out thanks to complicated (and confusing) tiebreaker scenarios.
2. Ohio State (10-1): Ohio State proved why it may have the best defense in the country after slowing and downright demolishing Indiana's explosive offense in a 38-15 beatdown. Ryan Day entered the season 2-6 against top-five teams but is 2-1 against them this fall, with his only blemish being the one-point loss at Oregon. The Buckeyes can clinch a rematch against Oregon in the Big Ten Championship Game with a win this week against Michigan. You can bet the Bucks will be out for blood following a three-game losing streak to the Wolverines.
3. Notre Dame (10-1): Might Notre Dame be playing the best football in the country? The Irish drilled Army 49-14 to stretch their win streak to nine games. They're outsourcing opponents by an average of 33 points during this winning streak, which started after that early season loss to Northern Illinois. Notre Dame has won six straight games against ranked opponents for the first time in 31 years. Running back Jeremiyah Love continues his fantastic pace, rushing for 130 yards and two touchdowns Saturday. Listen, Army is good. The Black Knights were undefeated and had beaten every opponent by double digits. A win this week at USC will secure home-field advantage for Notre Dame in the playoff.
4. Texas (10-1): Texas knocked off Kentucky 31-14 to set up perhaps the biggest game in Texas-Texas A&M history this week. A spot in the SEC Championship Game and a rematch with Georgia is on the line for the Longhorns. There's no use in identifying the good and bad from the win against Kentucky. The Longhorns scored 21 points in the first half for the eighth time this season, tying Oregon for the most occurrences this season. The most important story to follow is what Texas does at quarterback. Quinn Ewers injured his ankle and appeared to be hobbled in the second half against the Wildcats. How healthy will he be against the Aggies?
5. Penn State (10-1): It was gut-check time for Penn State on the road, and the Nittany Lions delivered once again with a 26-25 squeaker against Minnesota. Penn State converted a fake punt and another fourth down on the final possession to secure the win. It was a gutsy call for the fake punt, and James Franklin deserves a lot of credit for taking a chance in a one-point game from Minnesota's side of the field. A playoff spot was on the line, and the usually conservative Franklin rolled the dice. Penn State was clutch in the late moments of road games at USC and Wisconsin, but this performance was perhaps the best.
NHL power rankings:
1. Jets (15-1-0): Just when you think Connor Hellebuyck has reached the height of his powers, he keeps ascending. Through 12 games this season, Hellebuyck leads the NHL with 12.6 goals saved above average, and his .934 save percentage is first among regular starters. Winnipeg's underlying numbers haven't been as strong as its record, but that doesn't matter when Hellebuyck is playing like this.
2. Hurricanes (11-4-0): The defensive pairing of Jalen Chatfield and Dmitry Orlov has seen a more prominent role this season, and those two are crushing their minutes. With those two on the ice at five-on-five, the Hurricanes have a plus-9 goal differential and a 58.4% expected goals share. Chatfield and Orlov are a huge reason Carolina looks like one of the NHL's best teams this season.
3. Panthers (11-4-1): The Panthers have won seven straight games, they looked poised for another deep playoff run, and yet Carter Verhaeghe has yet to really get going. Verhaeghe has just four goals through 16 games, and he's shooting 6.3%. Verhaeghe's career average is 14.4%, so I would assume a barrage of goals is on the way. When that happens, Florida will only be even more dominant.
4.Wild (10-2-3): Marco Rossi, the No. 9 overall pick in 2020, is starting to look like another young star in Minnesota. Rossi has been given the keys to the No. 1 center role, playing between Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello. That's a sink-or-swim position, and Rossi has been Michael Phelps. The 23-year-old has four goals and nine assists, and his five-on-five impacts have been strong.
5. Capitals (10-4-1): Dylan Strome is now up to 18 assists on the season, and 10 of those have come on each one of Alex Ovechkin's goals. Strome and Ovechkin formed a decent chemistry throughout the 2023-24 season, but it has hit another level now. If Strome keeps dishing the puck like this, the Capitals will keep winning, and Ovi will close in on history sooner rather than later.
