The College Football Playoff picture, and most definitely the conference races, did not become any clearer last week. Six teams in the Power Rankings lost in Week 12, further muddying tiebreaker scenarios in the SEC and Big 12 while thrusting conversations into overdrive about how many teams from the SEC (and Big Ten) should be invited to play in the 12-team field. The debate will rage among rabid fan bases online until they're blue in the face. Then the games in CFB Week 13 and 14 will happen, and then championship Saturday will provide a clean line of demarcation. Order will likely be restored with just a tad bit of controversy instead of mass hysteria. Until then, chaos will reign before the CFP's final set of rankings are released. Shop CFB special packages here, or visit the services' home pages for more packages.
Heading to NFL Week 12, the Kansas City Chiefs are no longer the lone unbeaten, as the Buffalo Bills own the head-to-head tiebreaker over them for home-field advantage in the playoffs. The Pittsburgh Steelers are also in the race for home-field advantage after their win over the Baltimore Ravens -- and now have command of the AFC North. In the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers are in last place in the NFC West after their loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The Detroit Lions still reign supreme in the NFC North, while the Arizona Cardinals lead the logjam of the NFC West. Shop NFL special packages here, or visit the services' home pages for more packages.
The 2024 NBA Cup schedule tipped off last week and continues Tuesday night in Year 2 of its in-season tournament. The NBA Cup courts have a different look in 2024, but the event largely has the same format as 2023, its inaugural year -- even if that format could use some tweaks. Shop NBA special packages here, or visit the services' home pages for more packages.

    NFL power rankings:
    1. Lions (9-1-0): They abused the Jaguars on Sunday to get the offense back on track. They are rolling as the top seed in the NFC.
    2. Bills (9-2-0): The face some tough games down the stretch, but they have a chance at the top seed. The defense often gets overlooked and shouldn't.
    3. Chiefs (9-1-0): So much for the undefeated season. At least they got Xavier Worthy going against the Bills. That will be big down the line.
    4. Steelers (8-2-0): The defense came up big in the victory over the Ravens. But they need more from Russell Wilson than what they got for much of that game.
    5. Eagles (8-2-0): They have righted things to take firm control of the NFC East. Do people still want Nick Sirianni fired?

    CFB power rankings:
    1. Oregon (11-0): Traveling across the country in the Big Ten with a target on your back is a hard life. No. 1 Oregon played eight straight weeks without a bye and managed to beat No. 2 Ohio State and No. 20 Illinois during that span, which also included three road games, culminating with a 16-13 escape at Wisconsin on Saturday. The Ducks need rest, and they finally get it this week before closing the regular season against Washington on Nov. 30.
    2. Ohio State (9-1): Ohio State took care of business in a 31-7 win at Wrigley Field against Northwestern to claim its 47th straight game against an unranked team, the longest streak in the country. All eyes are on Columbus this week for the Buckeyes' third top-five matchup of the season against Indiana, which hasn't been part of a top-five showdown in its entire existence until this week. As for the Buckeyes, look at quarterback Will Howard. Often criticized, he still delivers. He's thrown multiple touchdowns in eight straight games, tying Colorado's Shedeur Sanders for the longest active streak in the country.
    3. Indiana (10-0): Indiana jumps Texas in the rankings this week after we got to watch the Longhorns in person for the first time this season Saturday. The Hoosiers are much more explosive, more consistent and have beaten every opponent but one by double digits. How the Hoosiers handle a top-five showdown at Ohio State remains to be seen, but the undefeated Big Ten team has done enough to garner a top-three ranking ahead of the biggest game in school history. Curt Cignetti agreed to a new, eight-year contract worth at least $8 million per year during Indiana's bye week.
    4. Texas (9-1): Texas is usually the most talented team when it steps on the field, and that's proven to be enough this season. The problem is when the Longhorns face a challenger with as much or more talent (ex: Georgia). The Longhorns looked listless at times on offense in a 20-10 win at Arkansas, and though Quinn Ewers gets the brunt of the criticism, he's not helped by the strange play-calling (I know the Hogs used a three-safety look, but why was Steve Sarkisian so intent on running the ball against the Hogs?). Ewers tends to panic under pressure, which is bothersome, and he prematurely ended at least two plays when he had more time to maneuver as the pocket collapsed Saturday. Texas' defense is among the nation's best, and showed it again, limiting one of the nation's top-10 offenses to under 300 yards while recording a season-high six sacks.
    5. Notre Dame (9-1): Notre Dame won its eighth straight game, dispatching a resurgent Virginia team by 21 points. Riley Leonard threw three touchdowns in the first half for the first time in his career, but it was the defense that was stellar, forcing five turnovers that turned into 21 points. All five turnovers were forced in the first half, the first occurrence in the FBS this season. Next up is a showdown with undefeated Army at Yankee Stadium. The Irish's path to the playoff is still clear with wins against the Black Knights and USC required to make the field.

    NHL power rankings:
    1. Jets (15-1-0): Just when you think Connor Hellebuyck has reached the height of his powers, he keeps ascending. Through 12 games this season, Hellebuyck leads the NHL with 12.6 goals saved above average, and his .934 save percentage is first among regular starters. Winnipeg's underlying numbers haven't been as strong as its record, but that doesn't matter when Hellebuyck is playing like this.
    2. Hurricanes (11-4-0): The defensive pairing of Jalen Chatfield and Dmitry Orlov has seen a more prominent role this season, and those two are crushing their minutes. With those two on the ice at five-on-five, the Hurricanes have a plus-9 goal differential and a 58.4% expected goals share. Chatfield and Orlov are a huge reason Carolina looks like one of the NHL's best teams this season.
    3. Panthers (11-4-1): The Panthers have won seven straight games, they looked poised for another deep playoff run, and yet Carter Verhaeghe has yet to really get going. Verhaeghe has just four goals through 16 games, and he's shooting 6.3%. Verhaeghe's career average is 14.4%, so I would assume a barrage of goals is on the way. When that happens, Florida will only be even more dominant.
4.Wild (10-2-3): Marco Rossi, the No. 9 overall pick in 2020, is starting to look like another young star in Minnesota. Rossi has been given the keys to the No. 1 center role, playing between Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello. That's a sink-or-swim position, and Rossi has been Michael Phelps. The 23-year-old has four goals and nine assists, and his five-on-five impacts have been strong.
    5. Capitals (10-4-1): Dylan Strome is now up to 18 assists on the season, and 10 of those have come on each one of Alex Ovechkin's goals. Strome and Ovechkin formed a decent chemistry throughout the 2023-24 season, but it has hit another level now. If Strome keeps dishing the puck like this, the Capitals will keep winning, and Ovi will close in on history sooner rather than later.

    NBA power rankings:
    1. Cavaliers (13-0): You never want to look too far ahead, but the Cavs could easily be 15-0 by the time they square off with the Celtics in an NBA Cup matchup next Tuesday. Please give this to us, basketball gods. Cleveland's offense has sputtered of late (relatively), but they've locked down when necessary to pull out some close wins. Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell have been lights out in crunch time, and the Cavs have a preposterous plus-71 net rating in six clutch games.
    2. Warriors (9-2): Getting manhandled by the Cavs aside, the Warriors are playing a brilliant brand of basketball on both sides of the floor. Steph Curry stole the show on Klay Thompson's return to the Bay, and he loved every second of it. The deep rotation is working for now, and don't overlook the Defensive Player of the Year-level performance Draymond Green has put up so far this season.
    3. Thunder (10-2): Ugh. With the start OKC is off to, the last thing you want to see is a major injury. Chet Holmgren landed hard on his hip against the Warriors and is now out at least two months, most likely more. That hasn't stopped the Thunder, who are 2-0 without him despite not playing anything that resembles a traditional big man (Isaiah Hartenstein and Jaylin Williams are also both out with injuries). Jalen Williams has been outstanding, but you wonder if their utterly dominant defense will fare without their 7-foot-1 rim protector in the middle.
    4. Celtics (10-3): Other than a rough home loss to the Trae Young-less Hawks in their NBA Cup opener, the Celtics keep rolling through a regular season that seems like a formality most nights. No. 1 in offense, No. 8 in defense -- all is well in Boston.
    5. Suns (9-3): Stop me if you've heard this one before, but members of the Suns' Big Three are dropping like flies, first with Kevin Durant going down for a couple weeks and then with Bradley Beal missing Wednesday's loss to the Kings. Devin Booker did his best without them, but this team is designed to fit around three stars, and, as we've seen, they're pretty damn good when everyone's healthy. With a lots of games on the board on a daily basis, if there is a time that you can use some solid advice and some strong selections, NOW IS THAT TIME.
